“Preservation” (2/2)

To Native Americans “historic preservation is no less that the perpetuation of living cultural traditions; beliefs, lifeways, languages, oral traditions, arts, crafts, and ceremonies, as well as the places and properties associated with them.” Yet how does the government see preservation? Removal, and relocation to sterile glass museum cases that one can view for a nominal fee. Oh, and don’t forget to stop at the gift shop on your way out.

“Preservation” (1/2)

In their own words, the Department of the Interior (in which the National Parks Service is housed), “protects and manages the Nation's natural resources and cultural heritage…and honors its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians…” The way in which this mission is carried out however, leaves much room for improvement. Preservation is ill-defined and interpreted differently by the U.S. Government and the indigenous peoples of America. In a National Parks Service report they found Native Americans deeply distressed at the way sacred artifacts were being handled by museum curators with no training or authority to handle such artifacts. They were angered by the way ancestral gravesites were being pillaged to be relocated to museums, and have expressed their wish that the items would be returned. This view of “preservation” of culture is unacceptable and dishonoring to indigenous peoples.

A Roman cistern. When the agriculture moved to a more extensive production, crop rotation and latifundia - so the need for water too. This water reservoir can be found in the island of Bretia in Dalmatia (today Croatia, Brac). It was built in stone of very small dimension with a thick layers of plasters mix with piece of bricks. It was located close to a farm complex "villae rusticae" situated close to the sea. It function was to collect the rain and water from the roof from the houses surrounding it. This example shows how effective did the Romans turn the water management to a level (aqueduct, water wheels, cisterns) that installed the Roman engineering to its legacy we know it today. Agriculture and the connection to earth, crop and fertility reveal an important aspect to the Romans, and so did they spread it through their conquered and new provinces (Dalmatia felt under Roman around 9 AD). The local production at that time would have be most probably grapes, olives tree and wheals.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is a defining symbol of Egypt and the last of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World, it is also the oldest of them. It is located on the Giza plateau near the modern city of Cairo and was built over a twenty-year period during the reign of the king Khufu (2589-2566 BCE, also known as Cheops) of the 4th Dynasty.

Until the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris, France in 1889 CE, the Great Pyramid was the tallest structure made by human hands in the world; a record it held for over 3,000 years and one unlikely to be broken #pyramids

Under the light of stars from millions of light years away lies a thousand years old tomb. With possibly the carvings of the people once was burried inside surrounded by flowers. That night was an overwhelming experience that reminded me how small we are compared to the vastness of time.
