Gang members wanted Mike dead. When people you are on the street with don’t even want to be with you….its a very dark, very black place. Mike felt like he didn’t even exist.
Mikes wife left him you see. Took the kids. As a dad myself how does one even begin to comprehend that? He covered the pain with alcohol and heroin. His own family disowned him and before long he ended up out on the street sleeping on the cement.
Mike eventually found the courage to ask for help. He recalls getting on the bus and crying the whole way there. Told the bus driver that he had no money but he was heading to treatment. The driver took pity. “The longest ride ever…..and all I could think about, all that was going through my head, was there has got to be more to life than this”……. I spent time with Mike on my recent trip to Seattle. The @seattlesugm re-established a sense of belonging. He has a reason to get up in the morning. He’s become an important member of their nightly search and rescue missions. On a cold January night I stood side by side with him as he handed out blankets and hot chocolate. It didn’t take me long to realise he needed this a lot more than those he was helping………
