Driving through the gorge is weird now after the eagle creek fire. Some parts still look the same and other parts are big black gashes through places I remember spending time with my family, like someone took a knife and gouged it out. It's going to take a long time for a lot of the trails to reopen. All the hazardous trees and terrain have to be removed, and so many bridges have to be rebuilt. But I'm grateful that very few people were injured, and very few homes were damaged despite the massive size of the fires. Our firefighters did an awesome job. I'll miss a lot of those places, but there is something to be said about the quiet resilience of the natural world, and the way it turns ashes into new greenery. It inspires me in my own way to remember that to be damaged does not mean you must remain tarnished forever.
