What Is a Colostomy?

A colostomy is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that’s made during surgery. The end of the colon (large intestine) is brought through this opening to form a stoma. Where the stoma will be on the abdomen depends on which part of the colon is used to make it. Some colostomies are large, some small; some are on the left side of the abdomen, some are on the right, others may be in the middle.
.
When you look at a stoma, you are actually looking at the lining (the mucosa) of the intestine, which looks a lot like the inside lining of your cheek. The stoma will look pink to red. It’s warm and moist and secretes small amounts of mucus.
.
The way the stoma looks depends on the type of colostomy the surgeon makes and on individual body differences. It may look quite large at first, but will shrink to its final size about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. The shape will be round to oval. Some stomas may stick out a little, while others are flat against the skin.
.
Unlike the anus, the stoma has no valve or shut-off muscle. This means you won’t be able to control the passage of stool from the stoma, but sometimes bowel movements can be managed in other ways. There are no nerve endings in the stoma, so the stoma itself is not a source of pain or discomfort.
.
A colostomy is not a disease, but a change in the way your body works. It surgically changes normal body function to allow stool to pass after a disease or injury.
Reasons for the procedure
.
Colostomy surgery may be needed to treat several different diseases and conditions. These include:
.
Birth defect, such as a blocked or missing anal opening, called an imperforate anus
.
Serious infection, such as diverticulitis, inflammation of little sacs on the colon
.
Inflammatory bowel disease
.
Injury to the colon or rectum
.
Partial or complete intestinal or bowel blockage
.
Rectal or colon cancer
.
Wounds or fistulas in the perineum. .

This rare video shows a struggling heart in ventricular fibrillation.

Ventricular fibrillation (V-fib or VF) is when the heart quivers instead of pumping due to disorganized electrical activity in the ventricles. V-Fib results in cardiac arrest with loss of consciousness and no pulse.  Several conditions/risk factors can cause V-Fib: coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome, electric shock, and intracranial hemorrhage are some.
V-Fib is treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, and early treatment is crucial to save the patient. Thanks to @themedicalmentors for the interesting case!

Donated 60% of his liver to his father 👉🏻 read on “The letter "L" means so many things to us. Besides being the initial of our surname, it comes accompanied by generosity, compatibility, friendship, happiness, love and, especially, LIFE. It has become my favorite letter, if we have favorite lyrics. It was the best choice of my life. The easiest decision to make for such a difficult attitude. It was difficult even to convince you that it was my decision and no one was going to change that. But his protective father instinct was speaking louder, concerned about every detail. It was the first time I "disobeyed" and it worked. The rest of the time, when I do not listen, everything goes wrong. You have the voice of reason along with the emotion. A tone in the sweet and angry timbre. But with this heart, there is not one that does not melt for Zezinho. It is an example to be followed, not only by the children, but all around them. God could not have given me a better father. Best in every way. You only have qualities, I do not see defects. It's perfect for me and for Ruan. Careful. Worried. Charismatic. Insistent. Helpful. Protector. Teacher of life. Your life story is amazing dad. Every fight he faced and won with his smile; awkward. There were so many battles that we lost count. One more day of the parents, one more text, one more statement .. and a love that is the most beautiful and pure in the world. Do not forget that I am your fan. My 60% of liver I donated, is not your Father's Day gift. Stay calm. It was for love. Father's day is simple, but it's heartfelt. Because if I could I would give you the whole universe. I love you for life. @ramongasparelli ”
